Fatal workplace injuries claim the lives of 2 airport workers

Ground workers at airports face a variety of hazards, some of which involve the dangers posed by service vehicles like tugs. Tugs are the tractor-like vehicles that tow trailers carrying heavy loads. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health has launched an investigation into a recent incident with a tug in which two workers suffered fatal workplace injuries while working at a busy international airport in California.

Reportedly, the incident occurred shortly after 7:20 a.m. on a recent Monday. A Cal/OSHA spokesperson says an outside source reported that two workers were crushed when a tug overturned and rolled onto them. It is unclear whether the workers died at the scene or at the hospital.

Ontario Airport, where this California tragedy occurred, plays a significant role in cargo shipping. UPS, the employer of the deceased workers, is cooperating with Cal/OSHA. Investigators will likely scrutinize the safety protocols that are in place and also compliance with prescribed standards. This could be a complicated investigation because workers rely on different entities involved at the airport to protect their safety.

Learning that a loved one suffered fatal workplace injuries is understandably devastating, and dealing with the aftermath is often daunting. Fortunately, help is available to obtain financial assistance at this difficult time. An experienced workers' compensation attorney can support and guide surviving family members through the process of claiming death benefits through the California workers' compensation insurance program. Compensation for survivors typically includes benefits to cover the cost of a funeral and burial along with a financial package for dependents to make up for lost wages.
