Workplace injuries caused when palm tree uproots inside hotel

A recent accident involving a California tree trimmer underscored the point that work-related accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. The man worked for a company of tree surgeons that was contracted to remove several trees at a San Diego hotel. Reportedly, one palm tree uprooted shortly before 11 a.m. It fell over, causing workplace injuries to a trimmer who was strapped to the tree.

According to a spokesperson for the company, the worker was at the height of about 30 feet in a 40-foot tree when the incident occurred. The spokesperson further noted that all the palm trees were inspected before work commenced and found to be healthy, although their roots appeared to be shallow. While the shallow roots seems to indicate a clear safety threat, the worker was still sent up the palm tree. The employer says the tree trimmer was adequately strapped to the tree and equipped with the required personal protective equipment.

Emergency workers transported the injured worker to an area hospital. The fall caused cuts to the worker's face, and a fractured leg and arm. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health requires notification of all workplace accidents that involve fatalities, hospitalization or the loss of a limb or other body part. Although OSHA did not launch an investigation into this incident immediately, it might still choose to do so.

Even though this worker was released after medical treatment, his fractured arm and leg will cause temporary disability, and along with lost wages, he will have to deal with medical expenses. Fortunately, the California workers' compensation insurance system typically covers these costs. Victims of workplace injuries can seek the support and guidance of an experienced workers' compensation attorney to simplify the claims process in pursuit of maximum applicable benefits.
