Fire causes severe workplace injuries

A fire broke out in a workshop on a recent Wednesday. Reportedly, one worker suffered burn injuries. Most workplace injuries are preventable, and the cause of the fire is being investigated. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health will likely also assess the employer's compliance with fire safety standards.

Reportedly, the fire broke out shortly after 3:30. Investigators report that many drums and compressed gas cylinders with unknown contents were stored in the workshop. A hazmat crew responded to determine the nature of the contents of the drums. Additionally, there were about 20 vehicles, backhoes and tractors on the property. The building was described as a commercial building.

There is concern about environmental harm and the possibility that hazardous chemicals were disposed of inappropriately. Furthermore, the area is residential, and the contents of the drums were of commercial nature. The fire erupted and caused injuries to one worker. It was later reported that the worker suffered second-degree burns over a significant part of his body.

Employees who suffer workplace injuries in California are typically eligible for workers' compensation benefits. Burn injuries could have long-term health and financial consequences. To recover medical expenses and a percentage of lost wages, many injured workers choose to seek the support and guidance of an attorney with experience in advocating for them. With the support and guidance of legal counsel, the victim can focus on recovery and returning to work while the lawyer navigates the benefits claim on behalf of the client. If the severity of injuries prevents the worker from returning to his or her previous occupation, additional benefits might be awarded.
