Workplace injuries cause death of 30-year-old California worker

|

Workers in California put their lives on the line every day. The risks of suffering workplace injuries are ever-present, and some are severe enough to cause death. An employee of a dredging company in California recently lost his life in such an accident.

Reportedly, the incident occurred on top of a silo at around noon on a recent Friday. A spokesperson for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health reported that a 30-year-old man was in the process of dismantling a conveyor motor’s metal casing. While using a cutting torch, the entire heavy metal tower collapsed onto the worker. Bystanders saw this and heard the worker’s calls for help.

Firefighters from two stations were dispatched, and the California Highway Patrol, the local sheriff’s office and Cal/OSHA responded. When they encountered a locked access gate, a police vehicle was used to smash through it. Using a 35-foot mechanized ladder, firefighters reached the injured worker. They managed to lift the collapsed structure to extricate the crushed worker. He was airlifted to an area hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries later.

Although nothing can replace a loved one, the surviving family members might find comfort in knowing that the California workers’ compensation insurance program will provide financial support. An attorney with experience in assisting families of workers who suffer fatal workplace injuries can help with the complicated benefits claims process. Death benefits typically cover end-of-life expenses and a financial package. This can relieve the financial burden of dealing with rental or mortgage payments and other day-to-day expenses in the aftermath of the tragedy.
