The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health requires construction company owners to appoint a competent person to conduct thorough manual and visual tests of the soil in which trenches are excavated. This person must then determine what type of protection is required to prevent cave-ins. Fatal construction workers accidents can occur if trench walls are not adequately supported. 

Top 10 OSHA violations: How to limit workplace injuries

Safety authorities in California say the recently issued report about the 10 most frequently cited safety violations in fiscal year 2018 could be invaluable for employers who prioritize workplace safety. More efficient safety measures will not only prevent workplace injuries, but they will also improve productivity, morale and the bottom line if increased insurance premiums can be avoided. Although the primary cited standards are the same as in previous years, the list underscores the need for additional attention to those risks.

Utility work: An especially dangerous job?

Unfortunately, workers sometimes suffer major injuries on the job. Such injuries could drastically change a worker's life, or even cut it tragically short. Risks of serious workplace injuries and workplace fatalities can come up in all kinds of industries. There are some fields though where these risks can be particularly high.
